Highlighting the Emotional Connection Between Hindi Songs and Music Games

Indians are emotionally connected to music games. Music games have been an inseparable part of our lives since times unknown. Even our grandparents and great-grandparents grew up playing games like Antaakshari, guess the song, musical chairs etc. These games are fun, change your mood and make you feel good in any situation.

Whether it’s a picnic outing or an outing with dear ones, a family get-together or a wedding, these music sessions where you get to play musical games are awesome. Whether you are sad or happy, these games add some joy to our daily routines.

Antakshari

Did you know that the first instances of Antakshari can be found in Ramayana, where rishis sang the initial verses of bhajans consistently by singing a new bhajan starting with the final letter of the ending word?

Originally antakshari began with this practice on Srilankan Tamil Radio, followed by Mumbai Radio and Television anchors. It began as a family pastime.

At the moment, there are different TV shows and competitions all across India. In the original style antakshari, two or more teams sing songs beginning with the ending consonant letter of the song sung by the last team. The moment a team sings a song they win points.

A famous Indian tv show with this name successfully ran on Zee TV for more than 10 years.

Do any of you remember playing this game as a kid or adult?

When was the last time you played it??

Musical Chairs

This game is popular in many countries. India does not lie behind. Almost all of us have participated in a game of musical chairs at some point of time in our lives. Musical chairs are all about listening carefully and waiting for the song or music to stop. As soon as it stops, you need to grab a chair and sit down. The person who does not get a chair to sit is disqualified and can not play anymore. The number of chairs decreases, with decreasing players. It’s a fun musical game.

Guess the song – Music Quiz

These guess the song quizzes are quite common. Song clips are played and someone needs to guess them just like in our GaanaP games. If you don’t recognise it in one shot, the songs are played again. Most of our games are in this pattern. This game is ideal for all parties, get-togethers, picnics etc. Try playing games like Aur Sunao, Theek Thak Ho and Teen Maar Khan if you love playing Bollywood music quizzes.

Theek Thaak Ho is the musical version of the old-school time game that we played as kids. We used to call it Tic-Tac-Toe Remember those good old days??

GaanaPehchaana has converted this childhood game into an enjoyable musical game. In this, each tile has a short musical clip that plays as soon as the tile is clicked. The first player can place an “X” on a tile by properly guessing the clip. Player 2 can do the same thing with an “O”. The first player to get 3 X’s and O’s in a line vertically, horizontally or diagonally wins the game. Isn’t that amazing?

Song Atlas

This game is just like our normal Atlas, only you have to name a song with the last letter of the previous song instead of a country. It proves your knowledge of Hindi film songs. Play this to prove whether you are an encyclopedia of Hindi film songs. If you haven’t played it before, you can try it out.

Do Birds And Animals Enjoy Hindi Film Songs?

It is not a lie that animals are more faithful than humans. Some of the best Bollywood films are about animals saving the lives of their human companions putting their own life to stake.

Well, whenever we are in trouble, our animal friends can sense it because of their 6th sense power. We humans don’t have the ability to predict any danger or perceive problems at the right time like our bird and animal friends who are more equipped than us in recognizing the dangers prevailing around them.

They can even sense natural calamities faster than us. They are a part of the environment around us and if we can’t love them, at least we shouldn’t harm them.

Keep Reading today’s Gaana Pehchaana blog to know how these creatures with the biggest souls help bring a big smile on the faces of their companions in popular Bollywood movies.

Mhare Hiwda Mein and Maiyya Yashoda were the biggest hits in the album. This was because of Ram-Laxman’s versatility and the alluring voices of our singers.

Our lives revolve around animals and birds. Most of our movies and songs have the theme of animals and birds in them. It’s not just the hero and the heroines in the films, who are saved by these friendly creatures but many amongst us have also been pulled out of danger by these four legged beings. We’ll come up with a list of many more such songs in some other blog.

There are around 3 to 4 versions of this song in the film and it was composed, written and sung according to the situation in the storyline. Sunny Deol and Sridevi were crowned the best pair in Bollywood at that time, because of their mind blowing performance in this.

Chandni O Meri Chandni (1989)

Chandni O Meri Chandni Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/2XiY2C8

Music: Shiv-Hari

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Sridevi, Jolly Mukherjee

Movie: Chandni

Chandni was a romantic musical. This massive blockbuster turned into an even more special film because Sridevi lent her divine voice to sing it.

The composers of this melody, Shiv-Hari are actually Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia, the widely acclaimed music directors as well as masters of santoor and flute. Shiv and Hari are giants in the world of Hindustani classical music.

Anand Bakshi had already flourished as a lyricist at this point of time. It is still ranked amongst the top 5 songs of Yash Chopra. In fact, Chopra was said to have had a Sridevi hangover and made many of his heroines from other films look similar to Sridevi from Chandni, but no other heroine could pull off the look as Sridevi in her whites from Chandni.

Music: Laxmikant, Pyarelal

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Kavita Krishnamuryhy, Amit Kumar

Movie: Chaalbaaz

Na Jaane Kahan Se Aayi was a sensational hit that broke all records. Times of India stated it to be a “Sridevi Classic, where she just looked wow with her chirpy expressions and rain drops patting on her cheeks”. Almost all songs from this movie became successful, but no song or performance can be compared to this one.

Sridevi’s dungaree dress was not in trend during that time, but they have become a fashion statement now.

Sunny Deol and Rajnikanth’s talent became dull in presence of Sridevi’s dazzling acting and dancing. Her expressions and antics widened her fanbase all over the world.

Morni Baga Ma Bole (1991)

Morni Baaga Ma Bole Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3m4J3pF

Music: Shiv-Hari

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Ila Arun

Movie: Lamhe

Lamhe was said to be way ahead of its time and many thought that it would have been more successful if released now. Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia made many Sridevi numbers iconic with their ultimate compositions and Anand Bakshi was always there to top it off with the creamy lyrics.

Ila Arun and Lata Mangeshkar sang this together. Lata Ji sang Sridevi’s part and Ila Arun slayed the rest of it. Even Ila ji’s dancing had that traditional Rajasthani flair and obviously Stidevi’s dancing was absolutely amazing beyond words.

Sridevi remarked that working in Lamhe was the most challenging experience of her professional life.

Navrai Majhi (2012)

Navrai Majhi Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3jRGq8d

Music: Amit Trivedi

Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire

Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Swanand Kirkire, Neelambari Kirkire, Natalie Di Luccio

Movie: English Vinglish

Sridevi made a comeback after 15 long years with English Vinglish. Her character resembled director Gauri Shinde’s mother in real life.

This song is a happy party track with the entire family dancing to it. The marathi lyrics by Swanand Kirkire sounds sugary sweet. Swanand is already an expert at penning down lyrics and this one was more special because he had to create something in his own mother tongue. He also contributed his voice to sing along with Sunidhi Chauhan and the other singers.

The genre of this song was not Sunidhi’s comfort genre but she did a great job along with Swanand, Neelambari and Natalie.

Amit Trivedi as usual did a wonderful job with the music and Sridevi rocked her role while playing a character of her age.

Sridevi dedicated her entire childhood and growing up years to acting, so she had taken a 15 year long break from it and then again returned to acting after a long gap in 2012. Her journey was always full of ups and downs.

Secrets Of The Velvet Voiced Singer- Talat Mahmood

There has never been a singer in Bollywood other than Talat Mahmood, who’s voice has been described as velvety and silky. People say that his songs perfectly describe pain and longing. His singing is at times also said to be the appropriate summation of Shelley’s powerful words, “the pleasure that is in sorrow is sweeter than the pleasure of pleasure itself”.

Talat Ji made us perceive ghazals in a different light. Whenever we talk of Talat Mahmood, Anil Biswas immediately pops into our head.

Who Moulded Talat Mahmood’s Career?

Anil Biswas, an established music director in the Hindi Film Industry in those days, who moulded the careers of Lata, Kishore and innumerable other prominent singers, was said to have recognised Talat ji’s talent. Talat had a quivering voice which he himself did not like. Once when Anil asked him to sing, he tried changing his voice, to which Anil remarked that you don’t need to change your voice, your original voice has such an amazing texture that you are sure to reach great heights if you sing in your own voice.

Going Against His Family To Fulfill His Dreams

Talat Saab hailed from Lucknow and his Urdu pronunciation was the plus point for him to sing in the Bollywood Music industry. Being from Lucknow, he was also the perfect gentleman in every sense of the word. Most of the leading actors loved his personality and respected him.

He belonged to an orthodox family who didn’t support his love for music and singing. So, he went out to make a fortune for himself in the world of music. He got a chance to sing for films in Calcutta, where he sang under the name Tapan Kumar.

After seeing his accomplishments, his family began to support him and asked him to study music, so he joined Marris College of Music, Lucknow (presently Bhatkhande Music Institute). He did not perform well in theory but he excelled in the practicals.

Tribute To Talat Mahmood Through A Fun Game!

There are many such stories from the life of this singer who had a mushy voice that sounded like the rustling of silk or the muffling of a broken heart.

We have created TMK 262, the Silky Voice Of Talat Mahmood as a tribute to his work. This Teen Maar Khan game includes some of his best songs. Install the app to play it and enjoy Gaana Pehchaana with your friends and family.

Here, we’ll be talking about some of his finest songs.

Mera Qarar Leja Mujhe Beqarar Karja (1952)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood

Movie: Aashiana

This is one of the best examples of a duet Talat song along with Lata Mangeshkar. In most of his duets, his co-singers get under the shadows of his brilliance as a singer. Even Lata Ji feared singing with him.

Madan Ji composed a great piece of music. The song can be watched in black and white, but the setting is in a hilly region where two lovers who have loved each other since childhood dedicate this melody to each other.

Music: Shankar- Jaikishan

Lyrics: Shailendra

Singers: Talat Mahmood

Movie: Shikhast

This mellow number belonged to a bygone era when music was perceived in a different way and true melody ruled the day.

Talat ji sang many songs for the handsome hero Dilip Kumar, which brought him to glory. This one composed by Shankar-Jaikishan and written by Shailendra is considered to be a true gem by Talat Mahmood.

Music: Ghulam Mohammad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singer: Talat Mahmood

Movie: Dil-E-Nadan

In the beginning, the song makes use of some Western stringed instruments before the track melts into Raaga Bhoop.

It was the most notable track in Dil-e-Nadan and Ghulam Mohammad received a lot of appreciation for it. Shakeel Saab wrote beautifully and it is a favourite by Talat for many music lovers. Talat was also the hero in this film and looked quite appealing.

Music: Shankar-Jaikishan

Lyrics: Shailendra

Singer: Talat Mahmood

Movie: Patita

Shailendra was inspired for the lyrics of this song from Percy Byshee Shelley’s memorable lines “Our Sweetest Songs are those that tell of saddest thought.”

The music justifies the situation in the song that shows a man consoling a problem stricken, broken woman who had been defeated in life. Talat Mahmood’s singing deserves applause and would give you goosebumps. These songs are immortal and have a special place in the history of Bollywood Music.

Jayen To Jayen Kahan (1954)

Music: S.D Burman

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood

Movie: Taxi Driver (Trivia: Dev Anand married his wife during a lunch break while shooting for Taxi Driver)

A mellow, sweet track that will actually transport you to the 1950’s. S.D Burman won Filmfare for the Talat Mahmood version of this song.

The song is a melancholic one and brings out the feelings of a man who seems to be lost in life. Talat Ji was known all over India and in many countries of the world for singing ghazals of this kind, which was different from the traditional ghazals.

Jalte Hain Jiske Liye (1959)

Music: S.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Talat Mahmood

Movie: Sujata

If ever there was a Talat Mahmood song that ruled over millions of hearts for decades, then it has to be this one. It is phenomenal.

Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics dive into the depths of emotions and S. D Burman’s composition brought to life by Talat’s soft voice still haunts us. The Harmonium could never complement any song with as much finesse as this one. It is magical and remained on top of the Binaca Geetmala charts for the longest time.

Music: Shankar- Jaikishan

Lyrics: Shailendra

Singers: Talat Mahmood

Movie: Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja

The “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja” movie was a great one but it did not become a massive hit. The storyline about a pilgrimage, the music, compositions, lyrics as well as the acting was the best. The best of all was Talat Mahmood singing this beautiful strain, which was the bonus point about the film.

It is a heart melting Talat Mahmood track that will give you a fuzzy feeling long after you finish listening to it.

Once composer Naushad saw him smoking and told him to stop it as it would ruin his god-gifted voice, but he didn’t. With time, his style of ghazals were replaced by peppy pop numbers and his dominance in the industry began fading away.

Later on Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali and some other Bollywood Ghazal singers followed in his footsteps.

Songs like “O Nigahen Mastana”, “Chod Do Aanchal” and “Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahi” from the 1957 “Paying Guest” album became blockbuster hits. Till today these songs can be heard at most Indian parties, but unfortunately, the Musician, lyricist and the singers did not get applauded for their songs as much as the stars who acted in the film. These songs are really precious and need to be treasured, as we won’t be able to come across such songs any more.

This amazing track brings to mind Asha Parekh and Sunil Dutt’s romantic exchange of glances where Sunil Dutt can be seen singing “Ye uthe subah chale, ye jhuke shaam dhale” dedicating it to Asha Parekh’s gorgeous eyes.

Raj Khosla, the director of Chiraag wanted Majrooh Sultanpuri to borrow a few lines from Faiz’s poetry for “Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa”, so Sultanpuri used some of the lines after seeking proper permission. It’s a heart melting number that can still make you go weak in the knees.

Hemant Kumar, as we know, gave some of the best compositions to Bollywood. Gulzar’s words exude deep meaning and Lata Mangeshkar turned this melody into an iconic one. True Hindi Film Music lovers still enjoy listening to this mellifluous melody.

Music: R.D Burman

Singers: Kishore Kumar Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Ghar

This is an epic number from the all-time favourite Rekha and Vinod Mehra starrer “Ghar”. R.D Burman created magic and Gulzar created the spine of the song that was wonderfully sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.

Kishore Kumar was said to have wrongly sung Gulzar’s words “Jab Hile” as “Lab Hile”, but it was released with Lab Hile and the mistake was accepted. People remember the film and the acting but without the music this epic drama and the amazing storyline could not have been expressed this way.

Humko To Jaan Se Pyari Hai Tumhari Aankhein is from the 1973 film named Naina which again means eyes. Well, Shashi Kapoor can be seen all smitten by Moushumi Chatterjee’s gorgeous eyes. Her eyes look glamorous and they are also in a beautiful shade.

He woos her the way most Bollywood heroes do and it makes the both of them look amazing with the mind blowing European architecture in the background.

Mohd Rafi was even nominated for Filmfare for the Best Male Playback singer and Shankar Jaikishan as well as Hasrat Jaipuri were lauded with appreciation, which acted as a ladder to success in their journey.

These songs belong to the days of yore when songs dedicated to the heroine’s eyes were depicted in a different way.

Amit Trivedi got all thumbs up for his attempt at composing as well as singing this song. Jaideep Sahni did a brilliant job with the lyrics. We even loved Radhika Apte’s role in the film and her portrayal in this number.

Where Did Sonu Nigam Imbibe His Love For Music From?

Sonu Nigam With Parents

Source: https://cutt.ly/Dm5Nlpl

Sonu Nigam had music in his blood, as his parents did a lot of stage shows and musical performances, but he came from a very humble background and did not have any fancy, expensive instruments as a kid. He learnt on a mini harmonium. When he became a successful singer, he brought the costliest instruments for himself.

As he came from nowhere, he always had a deep longing to rise and shine.

Messages By Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam With Shreya Ghoshal

He wanted to emerge out of the ashes like a Phoenix and by the blessings of God he achieved a lot. Sonu Nigam says that “My prayer is to learn new things, imbibe fresh insights. You must not take life too seriously. You must enjoy the process of living”.

Just like Sonu, we must learn new things, absorb new insights and not take life too seriously, instead enjoy the entire process of living.

As his father knew Shashodhar Mukherjee, who was one of the most renowned producers in those days, his son Shomu Mukherjee agreed to give Bappi Da the chance to create songs for this movie, but he asked him to compose 25 different varieties of songs. After Nanha Shikari, he got Zakhmee, Chalte Chalte and much more.
