We never know whether the same will be the case with the romantic songs of today or not because classics are irreplaceable.

Chaudhvin Ka Chaand Ho (1960)

Source: https://bit.ly/3gxFZyb

Music: Ravi

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singer: Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Chaudhvin Ka Chaand

“Chaudhvin Ka Chaand Ho” is an immortal romantic classic that can not be bound by time. It is still as popular as it was all those years back. The term Chaudhvin Ka Chaand is metaphorical. The plain and simple way in which it has been picturised is something typical of the 60s, but the deep meaning that it holds still resonates with today’s music lovers.

It’s based on Raag Pahadi. Shakeel Badayuni’s lyrics make it sound like a ghazal. Ravi’s music and Rafi’s singing come straight from the heart and can make anybody fall in love with the song.

Na Tum Hamein Jaano (1962)

Source: https://bit.ly/3cCWmIy

Music: Hemant Kumar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Hemant Kumar, Suman Kalyanpur

Movie: Baat Ek Raat Ki

The situation of this song is relatable even now. It’s all about a man and a woman who don’t know each other. Their circumstances make them meet and they feel as if they have known each other since ages. The woman is trapped by the villain because of her innocence and the man gets to the bottom of her problem to save her.

The story and this song particularly strike a chord with the people even in 2021, but Hemant Kumar’s timeless composition, Sultanpuri’s simple lyrics and the beautiful singing provide the real flavour of the 60’s.

Din Dhal Jaaye (1965)

Source: https://bit.ly/3xezc32

Music: S.D Burman

Lyrics: Shailendra

Singer: Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Guide

It was originally recorded by Rafi as “Hum Hi Mein Thi Na Koi Baat, Yaad Na Tumko Aa Sake, Tumne Hume Bhula Diya, Hum Na Tumko Bhula Sake” and later changed to “Din Dhal Jaaye”. Dev Anand is shown as a heart broken alcoholic. These days it’s hard to come across songs with heartbroken alcoholics as alcoholics are portrayed to be bold and independent. They don’t drink to express sadness, but to celebrate life. The theme of this song is evergreen but it has been represented in 1960s style.

S.D Burman, Shailendra and Mohammad Rafi’s hard work ended up in making the song attain cult status. Planet Bollywood listed it on the top of their 100 greatest Bollywood soundtracks.

Pukarta Chala Hoon Main (1965)

Source: https://bit.ly/3iDSz1A

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Mere Sanam

Biswajeet, the lovestruck man in the film, is out on a ride in his open top car and he just cannot stay calm, as his lead heroine, Asha Parekh rides on a bicycle in front of him. O.P Nayyar created music that sounds fresh anytime, in any decade.

There are plenty of songs of this kind in Bollywood even now, even the lyrics are appropriate for a romantic song set in 2021, it’s just that we don’t have a legend like Rafi anymore. This track is here to stay for many more decades to come.

Aye Meri Zohrajabeen (1965)

Source: https://bit.ly/3cCWHLk

Music: Abdul Ghafoor Breshna, Ravi

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singers: Prabodh Chandra Dey (Manna Dey)

Movie: Waqt

Qawwali love songs like “Aye Meri Zohrajabeen” are common till today. They are dedicated to a divine power or to a loved one. There is not a single Indian who hasn’t heard of “Aye Meri Zohrajabeen”. This is why Manna Dey is hailed as the god of Bollywood Music. The lyrics by Ludhianvi are written from a husband’s point of view dedicated to his wife. The music by Afghan composer Abdul Ghafoor Breshna and Ravi have the amazing elements of pure qawwali intertwined really beautifully.

Music: Shankar- Jaikishan

Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Arzoo

This was the only romantic song in the whole movie soundtrack to have left behind a deep imprint on people’s minds. Lata sang it on an extremely high pitch. Youngsters love and admire it because umpteen number of young singers have sung it and posted their versions on YouTube.

Shankar-Jaikishan were awarded with the filmfare, for being the best music directors for the music album. Jaipuri got the filmfare, especially for the lyrics of this song in the entire Arzoo album. If you wish to melt down your better half’s anger, you can also dedicate it to them in 2021.

Aao Huzoor Tumko (1968)

Aao Huzoor Tumko Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3vmWnqy

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: Noor Devasi

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Kismat

This song is as popular as the PM of India. Three songs from Kismat gained popularity including this one. Kismat was a family thriller. Even if people don’t remember the film, they just can’t forget this song. It has been passed down through the generations. There are new age Bollywood singers and music lovers like Jonita Gandhi who have time and again created their versions of it. The thing that will catch your attention is Babita’s similarity to Karishma Kapoor, her daughter. At times, you might even get confused.

The amazing composition by O.P Nayyar continues to enthrall people. Hats off to Asha Bhosle for imitating the voice of a drunk woman while singing it.

Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera (1969)

Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3pKTmiw

Music: S.D Burman

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar

Movie: Aradhana

“Kora Kagaz”, one of the most loved Kishore Kumar songs would sound great if it was made now. Maybe, we won’t get a lyricist like Anand Bakshi to present the feelings and situation in such beautiful words or a S.D Burman to create the evergreen music or maybe it would be difficult to find voices like Mahendra Kapoor and Kishore Kumar, but there is no dearth of talent and a song like this shot amidst the Himalayas with a present day crew, set and advanced technology would appeal youngsters as much as the old song.

If you guys have ears for good music, these songs will make you fall in love with them. Include them in your playlist to have a blast with romantic songs from the past.

What’s The Real Truth Behind Bollywood Song Remixes?

Recently, we got to witness lots of debates revolving around remixes in Bollywood. What is it about remixes that makes people love or hate them? Are they good or bad?

Why an increasing number of remixes in Bollywood Music albums has left people wondering about the dearth of creativity in the Music industry?

Today, Gaana Pehchaana is going to reveal everything about remixes.

How Remixes Attract People?

2010’s were considered to be the decade of remixes in Bollywood. Obviously, these songs became popular because people heard them and loved them. Until and unless people loved them, film directors, producers and labels would not think about recreating them. The idea of creating remixes started in Bollywood and has become normal for all regional Indian cinema in different languages.

The Struggle Between Remixes, Composers & Lyricists

Music composers and singers feel that remixes kill creativity and don’t allow the creative juices to flow freely.

Film directors, producers and labels are inclined towards remixes because they have the capacity to become overnight hits and in turn produce a lot of money. Though, when it comes to the music composers, usually the lazy ones are said to opt for remixes, but most of them don’t have their say in it. They are compelled to create them, unless they remain adamant.

Hook Lines- The Life Lines Of Bollywood Music

Another thing about hit Bollywood numbers including remixes are the hook lines. The popularity of a song is believed to depend on the one or two catchy lines that linger on in the minds of listeners. Even composers and lyricists are asked to focus on the hook lines instead of the antara, mukhra or any other part. So, we have also mentioned the hook lines of the remixes that we’ll be discussing.

In this week’s Gaana Pehchaana blog, Let’s know more about a few of the most popular Bollywood remixes of all time.

The Humma Song (1995, 2017)

The Humma Song Gaana Pehchaana

Sources: https://bit.ly/3clA25X, https://bit.ly/3gc8FMV

Music: AR Rahman, Badshah, Tanishk Bagchi

Lyrics: Mehboob

Singers: Jubin Nautiyal, Badshah, Shashaa Tirupati

Hook Line: Humma humma…

Humma humma humma

Hey hamma hamma..

Humma humma humma

Movie: Bombay, Ok Jaanu

The original song and movie were in Tamil as well as Hindi. The revamped version is only in Hindi and sounds brilliant. Middle Eastern tunes along with the rhythms of the Saxophone bring about the charm in the melody.

We absolutely love watching Shraddha and Aditya dancing to the song in a multicolored, hallucinating room, in which they have most probably been locked together. What’s better than celebrating their good time with this mind-blowing composition sung in a new style.

The soundtrack for the original film was one of the best selling albums in Bollywood that crossed over 15 million units. The remix has been showered with a lot of love and respect as well.

Lift Teri Band Hai (1997, 2017)

Lift Teri Band Hai Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3ijZ4X2

Music: Sandeep Shirodkar ft Anu Malik

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singer: Anu Malik and Neha Kakkar

Hook Line: Aaja aaja, aaja band baja leke aaja,

Teri yaad sataaye doolhe raja ab to aaja

Movie: Judwaa, Judwaa 2

Phenomenal lyrics brought to life through Dev Kohli’s mastermind. “Oonchi Hai Building” is sure to take you on a roller coaster ride. Whether it be the Salman, Rambha, Karishma pair or the Varun, Tapsee, Jacqueline pair, both the versions are great.

Sandeep Shirodkar did not make any massive changes to Anu Malik’s composition. The change is all about the minor alterations in technology and trends, which gives the new song a different appearance. It doesn’t matter how crazy or offbeat the song sounds, it can make anybody dance to it’s beats like a crazy buffoon.

Aankh Marey (1996, 2018)

Aankh Marey Song Gaana Pehchaana

Sources: https://bit.ly/3uXgnQe, https://bit.ly/3x3IiPV

Music: Tanishk Bagchi

Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed

Singers: Neha Kakkar, Mika Singh & Kumar Sanu

Hook Line: Oh ladki aankh marey, aankh maare, Oh ladki aankh marey, aankh marey

Movie: Tere Mere Sapne, Simmba

These days Tanishk Bagchi is the best composer for making remixes. He agrees to the director and producer’s choice of having a remix and we find that the maximum remixes have been made by him. To be honest, this song was a great attempt.

The best part was Arshad Warsi making a cameo appearance in a section sung by Kumar Sanu. We literally enjoyed that bit as Arshad was also there in the  original 1996 song from Tere Mere Sapne sung by Sanu. Popular, award winning lyricist Shabbir Ahmed got lucky that a song written by him could be heard everywhere once again, after a decade or more.

Even the song video became a smashing hit as we danced along with Sara and Ranveer who gave their best performances under Rohit Shetty’s fabulous direction.

Maine Tujhko Dekha (1997, 2018)

Maine Tujhko Dekha Song Gaana Pehchaana

Sources: https://bit.ly/3ilbKgn, https://bit.ly/3pnFzhM

Music: Amaal Mallik

Lyrics: Kumaar

Singers: Neeraj Shridhar, Sukriti Kakar

Hook Line: Neend churayi meri, kisne oh sanam?

Tune… tune…

O.. Chain churaya tera, kisne oh sanam?

Tune… tune… o o o…

Movie: Ishq, Golmaal Again

Bollywood music lovers just can’t get over this number. Even recently, we had the Neend Churai Meri version from Ishq recorded in our brains when the new Maine Tujhko Dekha version came out. The best part was that Ajay Devgan came back with his supersonic performance in a modern avatar. This time, it was opposite Parineeti Chopra instead of Kajol. Amaal Mallik rehashed the Anu Malik version very carefully.

The original lyrics by Rahat Indori had a lot more rhyme and rhythm than this one. Neeraj Shridhar and Sukriti Kakkar took up the biggest responsibility. They sang the remix of a song originally sung by the likes of musical geniuses like Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu and Kavita Krishnamurthy.

Ek Do Teen (1988, 2018)

Ek Do Teen Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3clta8I

Music: Sandeep Shirodkar

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

Singer: Palak Mucchal

Hook Line: Ek do teen chaar paanch chhe saat aath nau do gyarah barah terah x (2)

Movie: Tezaab, Baaghi 2

“Ek Do Teen” was a massive sensation. It was so well received by the Indian audience that after Tezaab’s release every dance lover could be seen matching their steps to this song. The song became an emotion and Saroj Khan won a filmfare for her brilliant choreography.

Even Madhuri’s life and career changed after it. Every filmmaker and producer wanted to get a dance number done by Madhuri for their film. Senior actresses were put behind her in the dance sequences, as filmmakers believed that nobody could do it better than her.

Javed Akhtar’s lyrics have not been tarnished in the remix. Mr Akhtar said that when Lakshmikant Pyarelal first narrated the tune, they had used dummy numbers, but he felt that he could keep the numbers in the lyrics, so he did that and it was a hit. Palak Mucchal deserves accolades for singing the original Alka Yagnik version so beautifully that nobody could make out the difference.

Dus Bahane 2.0 (2005, 2020)

Dus Bahane Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/2T3Ovgk

Music: Vishal & Shekhar

Lyrics: Panchhi

Singers: KK, Shaan, Tulsi

Hook Line: Dus bahane karke le gaye dil, le gaye dil

Movie: Dus, Baaghi 3

Vishal-Shekar were asked to recreate this big hit of theirs keeping in mind the Bollywood frenzy audience who went crazy over the original “Dus Bahane Karke Le Gaye Dil”.

The fast beats and peppy music that make you sway your body the moment you hear it has something iconic about it. KK and Shaan returned to sing it along with Tulsi Kumar after so many years. The new version starring Tiger and Shraddha will make your adrenaline rush faster than ever. If you are hosting a party or get-together of some kind, you can always keep this number on repeat to create an electrifying ambience.

Muqabla (1994, 2020)

Muqabala Song Gaana Pehchaana

Sources: https://bit.ly/2T0Ct7t, https://bit.ly/2TGdFlj

Music: Tanishk Bagchi

Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed, Tanishk Bagchi

Singers: Yash Narvekar, Parampara

Hook Line: Munh Kaala, Muqabla

Laila, Oh Ho Laila

Mukabla Subhan Allah Laila

Oh Ho Laila

Movie: Humse Hai Muqabala, Street Dancer 3D

We can define the new Muqabla as a fresh version of a cult number that is equally popular and loved by the audience as the old one.

Nothing can beat the original A.R Rahman composition for the Tamil film Kadhalan dubbed in Hindi as Humse Hai Muqabla. The original lyrics by P.K Mishra were tweaked a bit to suit the situation of the new song. Even after so many years Prabhudeva has set the stage on fire with his fantastic dance moves. Hats off to Remo D Souza for visualizing the entire theme and bringing the dancing hero back to the pavilion.

Copyright law in India considers composers who create music to be the original owner of a song. It does not consider a singer as the owner and in case you are creating a remix, you need to take permission from the original composer and he or she has complete rights to listen to it, get changes made and decide whether you can release your remix or not.

Why Demise Of Composer Raam-Laxman Is A Huge Loss To Bollywood?

A few days back, we heard that Vijay Patil or Laxman of the popular Raam-Laxman composer duo has passed away at the age of 78, due to a sudden cardiac arrest.

We were disheartened, and the entire Bollywood fraternity mourned the loss of a musical gem who continued to compose music even after the demise of his partner Surendra Hindre.

Raam-laxman’s musical journey began with Vijay’s orchestral venture. He was an expert at playing the accordion and named his orchestra “Amar”, after his son’s name.

Who Brought Raam and Laxman Together?

Popular comedian, Dada Kondke was so impressed by his orchestra, that he asked him to make music for the popular 1975 Marathi comedy, “Pandu Hawaldar”.

He composed it along with his friend Raam, and it became a super-duper hit. This established their lifelong relationship with Kondke, who lovingly named the duo Raam-Laxman.

Sultana, Sultana Mera Naam Hain Sultana (1979)

Sultana Sultana Mera Naam Hain Sultana Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/AnsyuXW

Music: Raam- Laxman

Lyrics: Ravindra Rawal

Singer: Usha Mangeshkar

Movie: Taraana

Taraana left a long-lasting impression on Bollywood lovers because of its music. This song sounds like something straight out of an Arabian Nights tale. The tune also has nomadic undertones. Raam-Laxman or Vijay Patil Ji considered Usha Mangeshkar to be his favourite singer. Her voice texture and singing style have a different kind of beauty. Ravindra Rawal has painted a beautiful story about a nomad girl with his soul-stirring lyrics. Watch the video to enjoy the song.

Didi Tera Devar Deewana (1989)

Music: Raam Laxman

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, S P Balasubrahmanyam

Movie: Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Another family dhamaka number composed by Raam-Laxman and sung by Lata Mangeshkar, SP Balasubramanyam.

“Didi Tera Devar Deewana” is a song that remains at the tip of every Indian’s tongue. The songs and the film were so well received that Hum Aapke Hain Koun turned out to be the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1990s and the maximum earning Indian film at that time.

This track was inspired by an Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song called Saare Nabian. The song remained at the top of the charts for more than a year.

Blockbuster India described the movie as the “Biggest Blockbuster of the Modern Era”. Even the Telugu version called Premalayam ran for more than 200 days. The track is all about a big family party where the boys and the girls get into different groups to have fun and tease each other.

Dil Deewana Song Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Raam-Laxman

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Maine Pyar Kiya

Ah, what a song! This came along in Salman Khan, Bhagyashree and Sooraj Barjatya’s life when they were still in the struggling phase and turned them into the most sought after stars. Raam-Laxman’s super successful compositions played the biggest role in helping Sooraj Barjatya turn the movie into a massive hit.

These movies would stay in the theatres for more than 150 weeks, which is unbelievable now. It was a big break for Dev Kohli after his first film and Lata Mangeshkar rocked with her singing.

Music: Raam-Laxman

Lyrics: Dilip Tahir

Singer: S.P Balasubramaniam, Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: 100 Days

Many people have heard this number again and again but they might not be aware of who wrote it, composed it or sang it. Lata Mangeshkar and S.P Balasubramaniam did

complete justice to the relatable music by Raam-Lakshman.

Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit’s chemistry took a different turn along with this beautiful number in the thrilling supernatural cinema. The combination of stringed instruments, wind instruments, tabla and all create a versatile rhythm that you won’t be able to stop listening to.

Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai (1994)

Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hain Song Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Raam-Laxman

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singer: S.P Balasubramaniam

Movie: Hum Aapke Hain Koun

“Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai” always has our heart with it. It’s one of the most well-loved songs of the 21st century. This song was a favourite wedding number. The songs and the games from Hum Aapke Hain Koun were so well received by the Indian audience that no wedding would be complete without them. Lata Mangeshkar sang 11 of the songs out of 15.

The winner of 5 Filmfare awards, Hum Aapke Hain Koun became a part of our being with amazing melodies like Pehla Pehla Pyar written beautifully by Dehradun based Dev Kohli, composed by the most talented Raam-Laxman and sung by S.P Balasubramaniam.

Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999)

Hum Saath Saath Hain Title Song

Source: https://cutt.ly/9nsyP0F

Music: Raam Laxman

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singer: Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Hariharan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Anuradha Paudwal

Movie: Hum Saath Saath Hain

Raam-Laxman has always been grateful to Tarachand Barjatya for giving them the scope to shine in Hindi films. Laxman or Vijay Patil says that Rajshri Banner brought all the luck in their lives. Rajshri movies are completely about family, love and laughter without any villains or vamps. Sooraj Barjatya claims to make his films based on the values that he has grown up with or seen around him in his Marwari family.

Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Hariharan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal make the Mohnish-Tabu, Salman-Sonali and Saif-Karishma pair shine on screen with their spectacular matching attires. We just can’t get over this title track from our childhood even after so many years.

Maiyya Yashoda (1999)

Maiyya Yashoda Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/ynsyGU9

Music: Raam-Laxman

Lyrics: Kiran R

Singers: Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal

Movie: Hum Saath Saath Hain

Maiyya Yashoda is a priceless gem from the end of the 20th century composed by Raam-Laxman. These were the last of the biggest hits before the 21st century began and the meaning of hit music changed altogether.

Anuradha Paudwal was already the guru of devotional music and with the help of Alka Yagnik, she sang this memorable melody penned down by Kiran R which still makes us nostalgic and reminds us of those old days when family gatherings had a different flavour.

Karishma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre and Tabu have been picturised as Radha. Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan and Mohnish Bahl are the naughty Krishna’s, whereas Reema Lagoo is shown as Maiyya Yashoda.

Ye To Sach Hai Ki Bhagwan Hain (1999)

Yeh To Sach Hain Ki Bhagwan Hai Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Raam-Laxman

Lyrics: Ravindra Rawal

Singers: Hariharan, Pratima Rao, Ghanshyam Vaswani, Santosh Tiwari, Ravinder Rawal

Movie: Hum Saath Saath Hain

All songs from Hum Saath Saath Hain were composed by Raam-Laxman and surprisingly the audience showered a lot of love and respect on each of the songs. Every song is a gem on its own. A different set of instruments have been used for each of them.

“Ye To Sach Hai Ki Bhagwan Hain” is a group song sung by many different artists. It is all about God coming into our lives in the form of parents. The family set-up for the song is a typical Sooraj Barjatya one.

What Raam-Laxman’s Dhamakedaar Music Means To Bollywood Music Lovers?

Raam-Lakshman composed songs for films that provided the most wholesome entertainment. The Basuri and Accordion duo made music from their heart that listeners could easily connect to. Even though Raam or Surendra of the duo could not live to watch the success of Agent Vinod released in 1977, Laxman did not want to stop making music or change the name of their duo even after his partner’s demise. His contribution to Music has been engraved on the golden pages of Bollywood forever. Whatever he made left a lasting impact and is here to stay.

Can You Score A 10/10 In This Amit Trivedi Quiz?

In times like these when creativity has taken a toll in the Bollywood Music Industry, composers like Amit Trivedi are hard to find. He is a pure representation of passion, dedication, innovation and creativity despite being lured by producers and labels into creating remixes.

His love for making music is greater than money, fame or quick success, so he does not believe in remixes or copying music that has already been done and dusted with.

He is like a whiff of fresh air in the otherwise mundane music scenario.

His rise to prominence came with Dev.D, but even his first film “Aamir” got him showered with a lot of love and respect. Dev. D became a hit particularly because of the songs. It was the first time in the history of Bollywood that the songs of a film helped it become a blockbuster hit.

How Amit Gets His Musical Inspirations In The Middle Of The Night?

Amit Trivedi With Anurag Kashyap

Source: https://bit.ly/3fdIxSy

Amit Trivedi confesses that musical inspirations come to him even in the midnight around 3am, 4am and there are times when he’s just left clueless and is not able to create anything. There is no specific place or time for an idea or inspiration to come to mind.

A composer needs to get a good idea about the script of the film, the situation and all to create the best music.

Amit is not just a renowned Bollywood Music composer, but he has started working on his independent label called “ATAzaad” as well.

Did you know that before coming into the Bollywood world and getting noticed by Anurag Kashyap, he worked for a long time creating advertisement jingles?

His biggest inspiration is A.R Rahman, whom he considers to be the God of Music. As a child, he was very naughty and didn’t do well in school, so he literally got expelled from his history class for a year. Now, he feels that all his naughtiness has shifted towards his music.

A Musical Pair Unlike No Other- PART 2

Hello everyone! 😃

We are back with a second part for the Lata Mangeshkar and R.D Burman blog titled “What Happened When Lata Mangeshkar sang for R.D Burman?

Lata Mangeshkar still fondly recalls Pancham. On several of his birth and death anniversaries, she talks in public about how much she misses her younger brother who was also her brother in law. She says that very few people know that he was a talented Tabla and Sarod player.

He never stopped experimenting with Music and always tried to introduce something new. She even mentions that the most unfortunate thing was that nobody supported him in his last days, but he always shared his problems with her and continues to rule over the hearts of Bollywood Music lovers because of his classic compositions and good behaviour.

What Kept R.D Burman Going?

The first composition of his life for a Bengali song was sung by Lata herself, which had her name “Amar Malati Lata”. The Hindi version of it was called “Hum Aur Tum The Saathi” and was sung by Kishore Kumar in “Hamare Tumhare”(1979).

The Fiat owner had a never-ending love for swimming, playing the mouth organ, harvesting chillies and good food.

We could not cover some of R.D’s most unique compositions sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the previous Gaana Pehchaana blog, so let us have a look at them in this one.

Kya Janoon Sajan (1967)

Kya Jaanu Sajan Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3uR7AAl

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Baharon Ke Sapne

The rippling sound created in the music at the beginning of the melody and the variations in the sound of the instruments played in the backdrop show junior Burman’s talent as a composer. Lata Mangeshkar’s singing style was so regal that people cannot forget the song.

At times, it even becomes difficult for classical singers to sing it properly.

The otherworldly beauty of the 3-dimensional set and Rajesh Khanna, Asha Parekh’s vivid expression of emotions are like gems encrusted on gold, as the song is pure gold.

Bhai Battur (1968)

Bhai Battur Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3eOrAOo

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Rajendra Krishan

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Padosan

The tinkling sound of the Jal Tarang, in the beginning, sounds like the tinkling of bangles or jhumkas.

Like all the other songs from “Padosan”, even ” Bhai Battur” is extremely popular due to Saira Banu and Sunil Dutt’s class apart acting. The song depicts a comic sequence. We love watching Saira sing and dance in the shower.

“Bhai Battur” is a favourite of music lovers because of the delicate harkats and all. If you haven’t heard ” Bhai Battur, Bhai Battur Ab Jayenge Kitni Door” yet, watch Padosan or view the video on YouTube.

Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon (1976)

Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3olXzc4

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

Movie: Mehbooba

An immortal song that made R.D Burman hard to forget. It is believed that when R.D asked Kishore Kumar to sing it, he said that he won’t be able to attempt it because it was too difficult for him and would sing only on one condition, that is if Lata Mangeshkar sings it first. R.D agreed and Lata sang it, after which Kishore carefully listened to it for 7 days, before attempting to sing it.

The setting for the score was extremely spooky. It looks eerier because of the rain falling in the background and Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini reliving their past lives.

Dekho Maine Dekha Hain Ye Ek Sapna (1981)

Dekho Maine Dekha Hain Ye Ek Sapna Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3ycytkc

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar, Amit Kumar

Movie: Love Story

All songs from the 1981 debut film starring newcomers Kumar Gaurav and Vijayeta Pandit became Megahits. They were all R.D Burman compositions. Till today, most music enthusiasts are in love with the beautiful lyrics of this song that describe a happy home in the city of flowers.

The entire melody is a description of how Gaurav and Vijayeta make their home happy, functional and comfortable. It’s just their dream and imagination about the future that makes it so heart touching. This track got R.D Burman nominated for Filmfare in the Best Music category.

Tere Liye Palkon Ki Jhalar (1981)

Tere Liye Palkon Ki Jhalkar Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3yaDFVM

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Nida Fazli

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Harare

This one is Lata Mangeshkar’s  self-confessed R.D Burman favourite. Even though she has many favourites, this is really close to her heart. The soft and peaceful melody can make your day if you listen to it in the morning.

Tina Munim and Randhir Kapoor do proper justice to R.D’s heartfelt music and Lata’s singing with their immaculate acting. Nida Fazli, the Padma Shri winner for his contribution to literature penned down the magnetic lyrics, which made it more special. It topped the music charts in the ’80s and ’90s and could be repeatedly heard on various radio stations.

Jaane Kaise Kab Kahan Iqrar (1982)

Jaane Kaise Kab Kaha Iqrar Ho Gaya Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3ogLcxO

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Shakti

Another evergreen hit that portrayed R.D Burman as a hero. Lata Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bhosle once said that the thing about Bollywood Music till the ‘90s was that there would be so many songs in one film and each of the songs would be a hit, which is no more the case. We don’t have similar hits. Nowadays, we don’t remember the songs for too long. They come into trend and then vanish away. “Jaane Kaise Kab Kahan Iqrar” has not vanished away from the hearts of music lovers. It is an eternal favourite by R.D Burman, Lata Mangeshkar and Anand Bakshi. Shakti gained popularity only because of this song.

Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi (1983)

Source: https://bit.ly/3eUj9RT

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Gulzar

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar, Anoop Ghoshal

The female version of this beautiful number has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar whereas the male version was sung by Anoop Ghosh. R.D Burman had put his heart and soul into creating the beautiful music in Raag Pilu which brings out the pain of a mother through Lata’s voice.

Her mellifluous voice poignantly portrays the feelings of a mother who cannot call her husband’s illicit son her own and love him as her own child.

Gulzar won the Filmfare for his heart-stirring lyrics for this track. It is an immensely popular song.

What Lata Didi Says About Her Dear Pancham?

Source: https://bit.ly/3ymKvI3

A few more beans spilt by Lata Mangeshkar about Pancham are that his favourite recording studio was the Film Center in Tardeo Bombay. It was the only existing studio with a gigantic piano in those days which he was fond of.

He gained most of his knowledge on Western Music from Kersi Lord, who possessed a huge collection of long-play records like Jazz, Latin American, Middle Eastern and European Music.

Pancham was not particularly in love with Western Classical Music, but he had an impulse for purchasing all kinds of western instruments sounding offbeat. Once, he purchased a Flanger from America, which produced a unique sound, so he used it for “Dhanno Ki Aankhon Mein” sung by him for the 1977 film Kitaab. It is still considered to be Pancham’s most unique improvisation.

We all know about Pancham’s love for experimentation and thirst for creating the best. He deserved a lot more awards in his lifetime.

What Made This Lyricist A Guinness World Record Breaker?

Have you ever come across Sameer Anjaan’s name on Gaana Pehchaana?

Well, he is the most loved lyricist in B-Town and all through these years, he has only become better at what he does. In several interviews, he mentioned that his talent is god’s gift to him. What he does comes so naturally to him, that he feels like some supernatural powers help him pen down the heart piercing words!!

It’s not an easy task to get established as a lyricist in the industry. Even Sameer’s father, the popular Anjaan, had to go through various ups and downs for almost 8 years, before he could achieve something, so he did not want his son to get into this field.

Anjaan even requested Chitragupta – the phenomenal Music Director to tell Sameer that he might be a great poetry writer, but he’s not up to the mark for the industry. Chitragupta couldn’t discourage him and rest everything is history. Sameer was destined to be a famous lyric writer, hence he became one. No power in the universe could stop him.

A Special Game For Our Fans (TMK-362 Themed “Sameer, The Lyricist!”)

Sameer’s talent could not remain hidden, which is why he was awarded the Filmfare and his name reached the Guinness Book of World Records in 2016 for being the only lyricist to have written more than 5000 songs. He is still writing. The maximum anybody could ever write.

He deserves a salute for this, hence we have created this particular game as an ode to him. Install the Gaana Pehchaana app on Android or iOS to play it.

Here are a few classic creations by Sameer.

Nazar Ke Saamne (1990)

Nazar Ke Saamne Song Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Nadeem Shravan

Lyrics: Sameer

Singers: Anuradha Paudwal, Kumar Sanu

Movie: Aashiqui

The Aashiqui soundtrack became a national favourite and has remained so. Nobody had expected the film or the songs to become so popular, because it starred Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal, who were just newcomers with no prior experience, but whether it be the magic of Sameer’s lyrics or the magnetic voices of the hit 90’s musical jodi Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal, “Nazar Ke Saamne” always remained in front of our nazar, jigar, kaan and dil. The song continues to have a large fan following and Sameer won his first Filmfare Award for this song.

Mujhe Neend Na Aaye (1990)

Mujhe Neend Na Aaye Song Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Anand, Milind

Lyrics: Sameer

Singers: Anuradha Paudwal, Udit Narayan

Movie: Dil

“Dil” movie was Sameer’s ladder to success. It made him an overnight sensation. The entire Dil Soundtrack album has been written by him. There were around 5 million cassettes of the album sold worldwide, which made it the maximum sold Bollywood Music Album of all time, along with “Maine Pyar Kiya”.

“Neend Na Aaye” reminds us of Amir and Madhuri’s sizzling chemistry. Sameer’s lyrics gave life to Anand Milind’s fresh composition sung beautifully by Anuradha and Udit expressing the love and yearning through their voices.

Music: Nadeem – Shravan

Lyrics: Sameer

Singers: Alka Yagnik, S.P Balasubramaniam

Movie: Saajan

The “Saajan” Music Album sold the highest number of copies in 1991. It is so popular that it will forever remain on the tip of every Indian’s tongue. Sameer’s tracks with Nadeem-Shravan have never been a failure and especially when legends like Alka Yagnik and S.P Balasubramaniam sing together, they can break down mountains and cross over mighty oceans. The beat of a dafli or ghungroo can be consistently heard through the entire song. Whether you have watched the film or not, you’ll love watching the song video again and again as Salman and Madhuri’s eyes drift into the scene of a jeep disappearing into the evening sky.

Akhiyaan Milaoon Kabhi (1995)

Akhiyaan Milaaon Kabhi Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/MbIK41Q

Music: Nadeem, Shravan

Lyrics: Sameer

Singers: Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan

Movie: Raja

“Akhiyaan Milaoon Kabhi Ankhiyan Churau, Kya Tune Kiya Jaadu” is well known for Madhuri’s comic eye movements and Madhuri, Sanjay’s signature dance moves. Madhuri’s funky costume became a style statement.

Sameer created the lyrics that rhyme and intertwine so beautifully that they sound great as a pop number. The lyrics would even sound great if sung in some other genre. That’s the beauty of the song. Alka and Udit did their best to make it to the top of the charts in 1995. In fact, it still sounds fresh and new anytime you play it.

What Is Mobile Number? (1999)

What Is Mobile Number Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/KbILpHi

Music: Anu Mallik

Lyrics: Sameer

Singers: Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik

Movie: Haseena Maan Jayegi

Sameer once said that a Music Director had told him that the relationship between a director and lyricist is similar to the relationship between a husband and wife. This song absolutely proves that. Sameer could not have created the dhinchak Lyrics without Anu Mallik’s dhinchak music. Sonu and Alka create a fun atmosphere for Govinda and Karishma, who are trying to get connected to each other’s mobile number. It’s a happy go lucky song that will make you feel relaxed and cheerful anytime you listen to it.

Jabse Tere Naina (2007)

Jab Se Tere Naina Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/HbILgrY

Music: Monty Sharma

Lyrics: Sameer Anjaan

Singer: Shaan

Movie: Saawariya

Sameer is indeed blessed by God, otherwise it is next to impossible for mortals to create lyrics of this level. Popular Composer Pyarelal Sharma’s nephew Monty Sharma and Shaan wove a musical masterpiece with Sameer’s lyrics and most importantly, it is Ranbir Kapoor, who brought the song to life with his class apart acting as a master artist. The more you listen to it, the more you’ll fall in love with the song.

Pehli Nazar Mein (2008)

Pehli Nazar Mein Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/zbIK2GG

Music: Pritam

Lyrics: Sameer

Singer: Atif Aslam

Movie: Race

“Pehli Nazar Mein” has been a big part of any 90’s kid’s life who grew up in the 2000’s. It is an original soundtrack from the Race album which comprises a few remixes as well.

We love the rhythmic beats and well synced lyrics and obviously Atif singing the beautiful words by Sameer casts a deep imprint on our hearts. Akshaye Khanna and Bipasha Basu set the screen on fire with their glamorous acting skills. The video is full of suspense.

Inspiring Sameer

Anjaan wanted Sameer to become a C.A or work in the bank. He got a job in the bank, but within a few days, he realised that it is not his world, so he left it and came back to Mumbai to do what he loved the most.

Let’s always remember this memorable quote by Sameer that would cheer us up on all the dark and gloomy days.

“When you fall, never get up without gaining anything. Always find something on the way up. If there are only rocks, grasp one to throw in order to defend yourself”. He teaches us to learn from our failures and to remain persistent.

Bollywood’s Obsession With Zulfen Songs

Every civilization and culture on earth has had a fascination for healthy, long and lustrous tresses. All the Bollywood songs on Zulfen indicated not just a woman’s tresses, but also that of a man.

Long hair has always been linked to wealth, power and good health. It is even a status symbol in many communities.

Just like heroes from popular fairy tales like Rapunzel are attracted to a woman’s hair, even Bollywood heroes love singing songs dedicated to the heroine’s tresses.

Hair is not just a symbol of romance, but in mythological stories like the Mahabharata and Iliad, women like Draupadi and Medusa can also be seen seeking vengeance with the help of their hair.

Let’s see how our Bollywood actors go about wooing their leading ladies with shiny tresses, in some of the most popular Bollywood songs.

Udein Jab Jab Zulfen Teri (1957)

Udein Jab Jab Zulfein Teri Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/wbl7qPE

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singers: Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Naya Daur

A popular song with satirical undertones. “Udein Jab Jab Zulfen Teri” will always be close to the hearts of Bollywood Music lovers from every era.

Vyjayantimala’s girl gang clap their hands and tap their feet to dance in perfect coordination. Similarly Dilip Kumar and his boy gang are in perfect coordination. This is actually a masterpiece by O.P Nayyar and Ludhianvi. Asha Bhosle and Mohammad Rafi singing for Vyjayantimala and Dilip Kumar, made the duo extremely popular. We just can’t stop admiring the beauty of the lyrics “Ude Jab Jab Zulfen Teri, Kawariyo Ka Dil Machle Jind Meriye”.

Zulf Ke Phande (1958)

Zulf Ke Phande Mein Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/abl45J7

Music: Omkar Prasad Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Mohammed Rafi

Movie: Mujrim

“Zulf Ke Phande” stars Johnny Walker and is obviously not a romantic track. It’s a comic one. The song talks about Johnny Walker’s dilemma as he was ensnared by the beauty of somebody’s hair which got him imprisoned.

Majrooh Sultanpuri’s satirical lyrics have a reference to himself “Ishq ki duniya ajab hai kaha tha Majrooh ne kal / Kuchh na banega chaahe chakale mein ghoome chaahe Tajmahal..”. Omkar Prasad Nayyar’s music brings the comic situation to life and Mohammed Rafi had a special singing style for Johnny Walker’s songs. Even Johnny’s prison mates love watching him sing it.

Raat Nikhri Hui Zulf Bikhri Hui (1960)

Raat Nikhri Hui Song Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/2bl7ehb

Music: Usha Khanna

Lyrics: K Manohar

Singers: Mukesh

Movie: Hum Hindustani

An all time favourite Zulf song starring the chocolate boy- Joy Mukherjee and the dancing legend- Helen. “Raat Nikhri Hui” would absolutely melt your heart, more so because of Mukesh’s buttery voice. Usha Khanna’s attempt at composing the music did not go to waste. She did an absolutely great job at it. If you love singing, you’ll enjoy humming to it’s heart lifting tune.

Bikhra Ke Zulfen (1961)

Zulf Bikhra Ke Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/2bl7tSS

Music: Ravi

Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

Singers: Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Nazrana

A heartwarming love song from a tragic film. “Bikhra Ke Zulfen” was shot in a scenic garden where Raj Kapoor sings for Vyjayanthimala. He is so awestruck at the sight of her tresses that he asks her to not come to the garden with open hair and when she asks why?, he replies that the flowers would feel shy if caught admiring the beauty of her tresses. In return, Vyjayanthimala tells him to stop singing love verses, otherwise the bees would make fun. Mukesh and Lata’s singing cum conversation sounds interesting.

Teri Zulfon Se Judaai To Nhi Maangi Thi (1961)

Zulf Song Dev Anand

Source: https://cutt.ly/Rbl7oQO

Music: Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Singer: Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Jab Pyar KisiSe Hota Hain

Couldn’t skip a zulf song starring Dev Anand. He’s a personal favourite and the song can actually set the mood for a musical evening. The film had a confusing storyline, but the movie as well as the songs were big hits.

Dev sings it for Asha Parekh, even after she rebukes him.

Only lyricists like Hasrat Jaipuri could have written songs like this one. The music by Shankar and Jaikishan is replete with the divine strumming of the violins. Give it a try, if you haven’t heard it yet.

Ye Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera (1965)

Yeh Hain Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/9bxQv8D

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Mere Sanam

The film “Mere Sanam” was a remake of the 1961 romantic comedy ” Come September”. The song seems to be shrouded in a cloud of deep mystery. Surprisingly, most of the compositions for our zulfen songs would be composed by O.P Nayyar. You’ll love hearing Asha’s voice echo through, as Mumtaz tries to convey some secret message to Biswajit and the sequence becomes quite intense.

Zulfon Ko Hata Le (1966)

Zulfon Ko Hata Le Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/5bl7j8u

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: S.H Bihari

Singers: Mohammed Rafi

Movie: Sawan Ki Ghata

This is one of the most popular Zulf tracks in Bollywood. The handsome Manoj Kumar can be seen wooing the demure Sharmila Tagore, who has the most beautiful hair covering her face. Sharmila was known for her typical hairstyle in those days. The music by Nayyar can calm your mind like never before. Rafi’s deep, husky voice does perfect justice to A.H Bihari’s string of precious words. Enjoy watching the video set in picturesque Himachal Pradesh.

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi

Movie: Teesri Manzil

In this one Shammi Kapoor, the Elvis Presley of Bollywood and Helen, the Anglo Burmese Dancing Diva light up the stage with their moves. In fact, they made the song more popular. R.D Burman and Asha Bhosle always rocked with these pop and cabaret numbers. The composition is so powerful that it has still not lost it’s charm. Maybe we might even get to hear a remix of it in the future. The part where Shammi plays the Saxophone is worth watching.

We can still hear love birds humming to the tunes of this classic number. An all-time favourite! Composed, written and sung by legends like Laxmikant Pyarelal, Anand Bakshi and Mohammed Rafi, this song is like an ode dedicated to Mumtaz by Rajesh Khanna in the film. Khanna can be seen singing it in awe of her mesmerising beauty. Such compositions can hardly be heard these days. It’s a precious number from our huge treasury of old Bollywood Romantic songs.

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi

Movie: Piya Ka Ghar

This song belongs to a time when marriages in India were mostly arranged and the bride and groom would not meet each other before marriage. There didn’t exist any technology like WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom or Facetime, so it would be absolutely impossible for the bride and groom to talk to each other. The only thing they had, would be a photograph.

Here both Malti and Ram are shown having each other’s photograph. Malti’s thick, long hair and gorgeous beauty makes Ram dedicate this wonderful song to her. On the other hand, even Malti thinks how handsome Ram would be in reality?

Cham Cham (2016)

Cham Cham Song Gaana Pehchaana

Music: Meet Bros

Lyrics: Kumaar, Meet Bros

Singer: Monali Thakur

Movie: Baaghi

These days, we don’t get to hear songs with the word zulf in it. So, we were all taken aback to hear the very first line of the “Cham Cham” song which goes like “Zulfon Se Bandh Liye Badal”. It’s been so many decades since lyricists felt that the word zulf is outdated, but hats off to Kumaar and Meet Bros for bringing it back after so long. It’s a sweet number sung by our sweet singer Monali and we loved watching Shraddha dance to it’s beats on a rainy morning. She dances so well that even the villain is shown to be awestruck by her beauty.

Why Zulfen Songs Are So Close To Our Hearts

Usage of the word Zulf has slowly disappeared from Bollywood songs after the 1970’s, but, just like we have some very dear memories and stories attached to our zulfen, similarly, even Bollywood actresses, music directors and singers have some vivid memories attached to Zulfen songs.

All through our childhood, we had our grandmothers and mothers taking care of our hair. They would oil our hair and tie it properly so that it became lush and long.

Bollywood actresses like Jaya Bhaduri, Sharmila Togore and Rekha who were renowned for their long hair also reported to have a very simple hair care routine in their youth. In fact, Sharmila Tagore’s beehive hairstyle became so famous, that every actress of her generation began following it. Till today, millions of girls and women try out her style to add a touch of retro to their hair.

Can You Guess These Cabaret Numbers From Bollywood?

Cabaret was extremely common in Bollywood all through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Originally, it was not a part of Indian culture and has travelled all the way from Europe.

These days we have item numbers. Similarly, earlier we used to have cabaret which was different because they were mostly performed in discos or bars where everyone would be seated in a particular pattern and there would be a stage in between or in the front for the dancers. Initially, the cabaret dancers would not be the lead heroine, but after a few years, the lead heroine could be seen doing Cabaret. Cuckoo and Helen were the very first dancers who broke the dance floor with their hits. Bindu, Faryal, Aruna Irani, Jayshree T, Padma Khanna and Leena Das were some of the other popular Cabaret Stars.

Recognise Your Favourite Cabaret Numbers To Reach The Top Of The Master Leaderboard

You all can log into the Gaana Pehchaana app to play TMK- 259 called “Before Item Songs, We Had Cabaret!”. Most of the Cabaret numbers in the game are popular and top favourites. If you fail to recognise more than 3 times, you’ll lose the game. Compete with other players and see whether you can reach the top of the Master Leaderboard or not.

Let’s read a bit about hit Cabaret songs from various decades and see how much we know about them.

Huzure Wala Jo Ho Ijaazat (1966)

Music: O.P Nayyar

Lyrics: Kashmiri

Singers: Asha Bhosle, Minoo Purshottam

Movie: Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi

“Huzure Wala Jo Ho Ijaazat” has the most perfect cabaret moves. Helen does the main dancing along with Madhumati, another yesteryear cabaret dancer. It is one of the very few black and white films with a cabaret sequence. Asha Bhosle’s singing shows why she was called the Queen of peppy dance numbers. No words for Minoo Purshottam who sings equally well. Those of you who are fond of dancing can try out these classic moves.

O Haseena ZulfonWale Jaane Jahan (1966)

Source: https://cutt.ly/Yv2YtRh

Aaj Ki Raat Koi Aane Ko Hai (1973)

Helen Cabaret Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/Ev2YpBu

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Anamika

This song weaves a certain mystery around it. Majrooh Sultanpuri’s words and R.D Burman’s music create a thrilling atmosphere and the sweetness of Asha Bhosle’s voice adds a mix of emotions to it. Helen’s cabaret becomes a sensation. The song is such that it can be easily used to portray mystery and thriller  scenes. You’ll absolutely enjoy the beat of the congo and bongo and the chorus singing Shubhu Shubhu Shubhu Shubhu.

Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo (1980)

Jab Chaaye Mera Jadoo Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/Lv2Yg10

Music: Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics: Amit Khanna

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Lootmaar

A super duper hit song that can still put any party to fire. “Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo” was specially created for the climax of “Lootmaar” film produced and directed by Dev Anand.  Dev Anand can be seen hunting for the culprit throughout the song. Rajesh Roshan and Amit Khanna composed and wrote all songs for the film and as usual the Pop Queen Asha Bhosle sang it in her own glamorous style.

Sanam Tum Jahan (1981)

Sanam Tum Jahan Parveen Babi Gaana Pehchaana

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Kaalia

Parveen Babi, the lady in red slays with her killer dance moves. She has her unique way of dancing and looks absolutely stunning with Amitabh Bachchan, as he joins her to show some of his dance moves.

R.D Burman was extremely talented when it came to creating these pop numbers for Asha Bhosle. The film highlighted Amitabh Bachchan’s Angry Young Man Image in those days and was a turning point in the career of both Bachchan as well as Parveen Babi.

Raat Baaki, Baat Baaki (1982)

Raat Baaqi Baat Baaqi Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/Mv2Ynhm

Music: Bappi Lahiri

Lyrics: Anjaan

Singers: Asha Bhosle, Bappi Lahiri, Shashi Kapoor

Movie: Namak Halal

The bold and gorgeous Parveen Babi never fails to impress with her moves. The Raat Baaki Baat Baki moves are just epic. Elements of Giorgio Moroder’s disco track “I Feel Love” found its way into this song. The innovative Electronic sequencing with the use of four beats and the repeating vocals with synth layering make it sound so special and different. It is Bappi Lahiri, Anjaan and Asha Bhosle’s creativity that add to it’s awesomeness. Even Shashi Kapoor tried his best with the vocals.

Kaisi Paheli Zindagani(2005)

Kaisi Paheli Zindagani Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://cutt.ly/Gv2YEGU

Music: Shantanu Moitra

Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire

Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan

Movie: Parineeta

These days cabaret numbers have been replaced by Item numbers, but still one or two typical examples of Cabaret can be seen. “Kaisi Paheli Zindagani” is one such classic example shot in a premier night club at Darjeeling. Rekha is seen doing the cabaret sequence and she does it really well. Her poise, grace and charm give a vintage appearance to the song. The part where she plays the Saxophone sounds divine. The lyrics by Kirkire, the music by Moitra and Chauhan’s singing create something very rare and unique.

Cabaret Dancers would be considered bold and daring in the 50s and 60s when these dance forms were not that common. It took a lot of effort to perform cabaret dance sequences and they were not a cheap affair. There is always a lot of demand for choreographers in Bollywood, as the entire industry thrives on dancing and singing. The storyline or plot of the films are less important than the dance sequences. The only significant change that can be seen in Bollywood dancing is that the Cabaret style has changed to Item Numbers, which are performed anywhere and everywhere, like streets, garden, terrace, hallway or theatre.

What Happened When Lata Mangeshkar Sang For R.D Burman?

R.D Burman, our well known Pancham da walked in his father’s footsteps to become the prolific Music Director that he was. He was named Pancham by his parents because when he cried as a baby, his voice seemed to hit the 5th note.

People thought that he composed most songs in his lifetime for his Ideal and Muse Asha Bhosle, who was also his wife. Nobody is aware of the fact that he composed innumerable songs for Asha’s sister, Lata as well.

Pancham da was a pioneer who brought about new arrangements and influences from World Music into his work. His work had a lot of originality. Unlike many other Bollywood composers who lifted tunes from Western compositions without admitting, he was honest about the sources. He admitted that he was trained in Indian classical and not the Western forms, so he would take an idea from them, but change the tune according to the situation.

In today’s Gaana Pehchaana blog, we’ll discuss the special bond that R.D Burman shared with Lata Mangeshkar. He fondly called her didi and the two have created some really good songs together. This also makes them one of the finest composer-singer duos in the history of Bollywood.

Here are a few of the most well acclaimed songs by the popular duo.

Bada Natkhat Hai Re (1971)

Source: https://cutt.ly/JvnJHFc

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Amar Prem

This one has lots of interesting stories revolving around it. “Bada Natkhat Hai Re Krishna Kanhaiya” had already been composed by Rahul Dev Burman, when his father, the world famous music director, S.D Burman asked him to change the tune.

Film Director Samanta had asked Rahul to create music for a Bhajan situation. While he was giving final touches, Sachin Dev Burman heard it and asked him to describe the situation. When he heard the situation, he felt that Rahul was not doing complete justice to it as a composer, so he requested him to change it because here Sharmila is no more the Nauch girl that she has been playing, but her motherly instincts can be seen for the little boy even if she could never be a real mother. That agony had to be expressed, which was then done in Raag Khamaj by R.D Burman and Lata sang it perfectly without a single mistake.

Bahon Mein Chale Aao (1973)

Source: https://cutt.ly/JvnJXos

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Anamika

“Bahon Mein Chale Aao” is always considered to be one of R.D Burman’s finest compositions. The rhythmic sound of the Duggi reverberates through the entire song, making it sound divine. It will actually be a big lie if someone says that R.D Burman did not create great compositions for Lata. Majrooh Sultanpuri must have been in a light mood when he wrote this song. Watch the all time favorite romantic number from Anamika starring Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar, if you haven’t watched it yet and you’ll surely feel a lot more happier. 🙂

Wada Karo Nahin Chodoge Tum Mera Saath (1973)

Source: https://cutt.ly/yvnJNTH

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singer: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Aa Gale Lag Ja

A classic number from “Aa Gale Lag Ja”, that will forever remain etched in the minds of people because of the unique composition by Burman. Even today, hundreds of reality show participants perform it.

The film had attained cult status in Algeria where it is still played at skating rinks and gymnastic shows. Lata Mangeshkar’s unique talent at performing romantic numbers like nobody else in the world made her create a history with this track. Sahir Ludhianvi crafted the best lyrics for almost all the songs from the film.

Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa To Nahi (1975)

Source: https://cutt.ly/tvnKoYi

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Gulzar

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

Movie: Aandhi

There hardly exists any Bollywood Music fan who has not heard of “Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa To Nahi”. The glamorous Suchitra Sen is seen portraying the role of a politician’s daughter and a politician, along with Sanjeev Kumar playing the role of a Hotel Manager.

The soulful music by R.D Burman is appropriate to the situation shown in the song where a separated husband and wife meet after ages. Gulzar’s lyrics hold deep meaning and Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar dive into the soul of the characters while singing the song. It is a PERFECT R.D Burman composition for Lata Mangeshkar.

Naam Gum Jaayega (1976)

Source: https://cutt.ly/2vnKff9

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Gulzar

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Kinara

“Naam Gum Jaayega” is an intense melodramatic song starring Hema Malini, Jeetendra and Dharmendra from the popular 1976 movie Kinara.

This beautiful Raga based song in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice sounds heavenly. The genre is just right for Lata’s voice as well as style, and R.D Burman knew it very well. The entire song was shot in the dazzling fort city of Mandu, situated in Madhya Pradesh.

Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na (1978)

Source: https://cutt.ly/1vnKk2V

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Gulzar

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Ghar

“A composition that can never die out”!!!

R.D Burman specially created “Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na” for Lata didi. Most of these Lata Mangeshkar, R.D Burman hits have been intelligently penned down by Gulzar.

Burman and Lata’s ability to analyse the situation in the film made the song starring glamorous Rekha and handsome Vinod Mehra come alive.

Tune O Rangeele (1981)

Source: https://cutt.ly/mvnKbUG

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Movie: Kudrat

The 80’s Bollywood song with the most catchy music. “Tune O Rangeele Kaisa Jadu Kiya” actually does some jadu on you and you just can’t stop repeating it like a broken record player. Hema Malini and Rajesh Khanna’s chemistry takes a turn with this amazing number set in picturesque Himachal. Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics and Lata Mangeshkar’s singing add to the playful nature of the song.

Why Lata and R.D Burman were the perfect singer composer duo?

It is believed that most of the melody based songs were assigned to Lata and Asha did maximum of the rhythm based songs.

Though both of them did both the kinds and the rhythm based songs made Asha a favourite amongst youngsters, R.D Burman is remembered as a great Music Director mostly because of his melody songs.

He mentioned in several of his interviews that “Lata Mangeshkar was the better singer”. In the Bombay Times Of India, dated September 29, 1985, he mentioned that “Lata Ji is Supreme”. When she sings, she forgets her identity, her likes, dislikes and everything else. Whether she agrees or not, she plays millions of different roles while singing. Sometimes, she plays a mother, at times a girlfriend, a sweetheart or a pain stricken individual in front of the microphone.

Even junior Burman had an innate talent for creating music in all kinds of weird ways, like by using glasses and spoons, rubbing sandpaper or knocking bamboo sticks, combs, shells etc.
