Do Birds And Animals Enjoy Hindi Film Songs?

It is not a lie that animals are more faithful than humans. Some of the best Bollywood films are about animals saving the lives of their human companions putting their own life to stake.

Well, whenever we are in trouble, our animal friends can sense it because of their 6th sense power. We humans don’t have the ability to predict any danger or perceive problems at the right time like our bird and animal friends who are more equipped than us in recognizing the dangers prevailing around them.

They can even sense natural calamities faster than us. They are a part of the environment around us and if we can’t love them, at least we shouldn’t harm them.

Keep Reading today’s Gaana Pehchaana blog to know how these creatures with the biggest souls help bring a big smile on the faces of their companions in popular Bollywood movies.

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Movie: Chirag

Chirag is mostly known for the song “Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa”, but “Bhor Hote Kaga Pukare” is a unique composition by Madan Mohan, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Bhor Hote Kaga Pukare is about this cute crow who comes to visit Asha at the break of the dawn. Asha is most probably putting up an act and is being watched by Sunil Dutt and others in the theatre.

Asha lovingly asks the crow to flee away and not disturb her as she has a lot of work to do.

Music: Laxmikant- Pyarelal

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singer: Mohd. Rafi

Movie: Haathi Mere Sathi

To be Honest, Hindi Cinema has never been able to create a children’s feature film of such stature as Haathi Mere Saathi. It was the highest grossing film in 1971, not just in India, but also in the Soviet Union. Anand Bakshi wrote this song depicting the death sequence of the heroic elephant Ramu, who dies trying to bring together his master Raju’s family.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal created amazing music for this heartrending number sung by Rafi that talks about Ramu having left this world full of hatred and wickedness.

Source: https://bit.ly/3gn0gXP

Music: R.D Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Kishore Kumar

Movie: Zehreela Insaan

Zehreela Insaan was a big flop, but this track became such a phenomena that it continues to live on within us.

This shows that a composer like R.D Burman could never go wrong. With the help of Sultanpuri’s words and Kishore Kumar’s glorious voice, O Hansini became a heart touching dedication to a female swan.

The female swan in the song is actually Moushumi Chatterjee, who can be seen dressed up as a white swan. A pair of swans floating in the water is mostly shown as a symbol of love. Rishi Kapoor and Moushumi Chatterjee play the swans really well.

This one’s a lovely song starring little Minoo caressing her darling goat in jet black. Minoo lip syncs to the heartfelt melody composed by Salil Chowdhury and sung by his daughter Antara. Antara Chowdhury was a child artist at that time.

Yogesh Gaud, the person who wrote the lyrics for classic melodies like Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye, Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli and Rajnigandha Phool penned down the lyrics for this sweet track portraying the true innocence of a little girl who runs away from the city with her goat and an unknown baby.

Enacting Tota And Maina In Main Tera Tota, Tu Meri Maina (1988)

Main Tera Tota Tu Meri Maina Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3szsN1j

Music: Bappi Lahiri

Lyrics: Anjaan, Kishore Kumar

Singers: S. Janaki

Movie: Paap Ki Duniya

Well, there is no real Tota or real Maina in this song. The Tota and the Maina are only dummies held by Chunky Pandey and Neelam Kothari. Chunky and Neelam are calling each other their Tota and Maina.

In legends, Tota and Maina are known as Love Birds. These birdie names suit the love birds. It’s a rare song for which Kishore Kumar has given the lyrics. S. Janaki, one of the most popular playback singers from Andhra Pradesh sang the lilting melody. The composition is true to Bappi Lahiri’s style.

Messenger Pigeon In Kabootar Ja Ja (1989)

Kabootar Ja Ja Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/2XAPSFm

Music: Raam Laxman

Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar, S.P. Balasubramaniam

Movie: Maine Pyar Kiya

The Maine Pyar Kiya Soundtrack was popular beyond words when released, but there is just one song in the entire album that involves a bird.

The pigeon was the most trained bird in history. The Kings and Queens reigning during the olden days were said to send letters with the help of pigeons. They just had to tie these letters at the feet of the pigeons.

In this song, we find Bhagyashree and Salman doing the same thing, tying love letters at the feet of a snow-white pigeon. The master of music Ram-Laxan, has composed and sung the song. We really miss him. There won’t be another like Vijay Patil, he gave the biggest gems to Bollywood.

Bhagyashree rocked in this role. Maine Pyar Kiya being her debut film and Sooraj Barjatya created an epic with this directorial debut of his.

Source: https://bit.ly/3D7E7GU

Music: Raam Laxman

Lyrics: R. Kiran

Singers: Alka Yagnik- Hariharan, Kavitha Krishnamurthi- Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal- Udit Narayan

Movie: Hum Saath Saath Hain

This well-known song from the more well-known film Hum Saath Saath Hain is about Peacocks dancing in the garden.

R.Kiran wrote parts of the lyrics in some dialect from Rajasthan and our trio of actors and actresses look dazzling while dancing like peacocks around the fort courtyards and gardens of Rajasthan.

Mhare Hiwda Mein and Maiyya Yashoda were the biggest hits in the album. This was because of Ram-Laxman’s versatility and the alluring voices of our singers.

Our lives revolve around animals and birds. Most of our movies and songs have the theme of animals and birds in them. It’s not just the hero and the heroines in the films, who are saved by these friendly creatures but many amongst us have also been pulled out of danger by these four legged beings. We’ll come up with a list of many more such songs in some other blog.

Her designer churidar suits in satin silk started a trend. Hats off to Bappi Lahiri for so easily pulling off the dancing music. Indeevar penned down the perfect lyrics with Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar doing complete justice to the singing.

Sunny Deol and Sridevi were crowned the best pair in Bollywood at that time, because of their mind blowing performance in this.

Chandni O Meri Chandni (1989)

Chandni O Meri Chandni Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/2XiY2C8

Music: Shiv-Hari

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Sridevi, Jolly Mukherjee

Movie: Chandni

Chandni was a romantic musical. This massive blockbuster turned into an even more special film because Sridevi lent her divine voice to sing it.

The composers of this melody, Shiv-Hari are actually Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia, the widely acclaimed music directors as well as masters of santoor and flute. Shiv and Hari are giants in the world of Hindustani classical music.

Anand Bakshi had already flourished as a lyricist at this point of time. It is still ranked amongst the top 5 songs of Yash Chopra. In fact, Chopra was said to have had a Sridevi hangover and made many of his heroines from other films look similar to Sridevi from Chandni, but no other heroine could pull off the look as Sridevi in her whites from Chandni.

Source: https://bit.ly/3gmhpRJ

Music: Laxmikant, Pyarelal

Movie: Chaalbaaz

Na Jaane Kahan Se Aayi was a sensational hit that broke all records. Times of India stated it to be a “Sridevi Classic, where she just looked wow with her chirpy expressions and rain drops patting on her cheeks”. Almost all songs from this movie became successful, but no song or performance can be compared to this one.

Sridevi’s dungaree dress was not in trend during that time, but they have become a fashion statement now.

Sunny Deol and Rajnikanth’s talent became dull in presence of Sridevi’s dazzling acting and dancing. Her expressions and antics widened her fanbase all over the world.

Morni Baga Ma Bole (1991)

Morni Baaga Ma Bole Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3m4J3pF

Music: Shiv-Hari

Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Ila Arun

Movie: Lamhe

Lamhe was said to be way ahead of its time and many thought that it would have been more successful if released now. Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia made many Sridevi numbers iconic with their ultimate compositions and Anand Bakshi was always there to top it off with the creamy lyrics.

Ila Arun and Lata Mangeshkar sang this together. Lata Ji sang Sridevi’s part and Ila Arun slayed the rest of it. Even Ila ji’s dancing had that traditional Rajasthani flair and obviously Stidevi’s dancing was absolutely amazing beyond words.

Sridevi remarked that working in Lamhe was the most challenging experience of her professional life.

Navrai Majhi (2012)

Navrai Majhi Gaana Pehchaana

Source: https://bit.ly/3jRGq8d

Music: Amit Trivedi

Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire

Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Swanand Kirkire, Neelambari Kirkire, Natalie Di Luccio

Movie: English Vinglish

Sridevi made a comeback after 15 long years with English Vinglish. Her character resembled director Gauri Shinde’s mother in real life.

This song is a happy party track with the entire family dancing to it. The marathi lyrics by Swanand Kirkire sounds sugary sweet. Swanand is already an expert at penning down lyrics and this one was more special because he had to create something in his own mother tongue. He also contributed his voice to sing along with Sunidhi Chauhan and the other singers.

The genre of this song was not Sunidhi’s comfort genre but she did a great job along with Swanand, Neelambari and Natalie.

Amit Trivedi as usual did a wonderful job with the music and Sridevi rocked her role while playing a character of her age.

Secrets Of The Velvet Voiced Singer- Talat Mahmood

There has never been a singer in Bollywood other than Talat Mahmood, who’s voice has been described as velvety and silky. People say that his songs perfectly describe pain and longing. His singing is at times also said to be the appropriate summation of Shelley’s powerful words, “the pleasure that is in sorrow is sweeter than the pleasure of pleasure itself”.

Talat Ji made us perceive ghazals in a different light. Whenever we talk of Talat Mahmood, Anil Biswas immediately pops into our head.

Who Moulded Talat Mahmood’s Career?

Anil Biswas, an established music director in the Hindi Film Industry in those days, who moulded the careers of Lata, Kishore and innumerable other prominent singers, was said to have recognised Talat ji’s talent. Talat had a quivering voice which he himself did not like. Once when Anil asked him to sing, he tried changing his voice, to which Anil remarked that you don’t need to change your voice, your original voice has such an amazing texture that you are sure to reach great heights if you sing in your own voice.

Going Against His Family To Fulfill His Dreams

Talat Saab hailed from Lucknow and his Urdu pronunciation was the plus point for him to sing in the Bollywood Music industry. Being from Lucknow, he was also the perfect gentleman in every sense of the word. Most of the leading actors loved his personality and respected him.

He belonged to an orthodox family who didn’t support his love for music and singing. So, he went out to make a fortune for himself in the world of music. He got a chance to sing for films in Calcutta, where he sang under the name Tapan Kumar.

After seeing his accomplishments, his family began to support him and asked him to study music, so he joined Marris College of Music, Lucknow (presently Bhatkhande Music Institute). He did not perform well in theory but he excelled in the practicals.

Tribute To Talat Mahmood Through A Fun Game!

There are many such stories from the life of this singer who had a mushy voice that sounded like the rustling of silk or the muffling of a broken heart.

We have created TMK 262, the Silky Voice Of Talat Mahmood as a tribute to his work. This Teen Maar Khan game includes some of his best songs. Install the app to play it and enjoy Gaana Pehchaana with your friends and family.

This is one of the best examples of a duet Talat song along with Lata Mangeshkar. In most of his duets, his co-singers get under the shadows of his brilliance as a singer. Even Lata Ji feared singing with him.

Madan Ji composed a great piece of music. The song can be watched in black and white, but the setting is in a hilly region where two lovers who have loved each other since childhood dedicate this melody to each other.

It was the most notable track in Dil-e-Nadan and Ghulam Mohammad received a lot of appreciation for it. Shakeel Saab wrote beautifully and it is a favourite by Talat for many music lovers. Talat was also the hero in this film and looked quite appealing.

Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics dive into the depths of emotions and S. D Burman’s composition brought to life by Talat’s soft voice still haunts us. The Harmonium could never complement any song with as much finesse as this one. It is magical and remained on top of the Binaca Geetmala charts for the longest time.

The “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja” movie was a great one but it did not become a massive hit. The storyline about a pilgrimage, the music, compositions, lyrics as well as the acting was the best. The best of all was Talat Mahmood singing this beautiful strain, which was the bonus point about the film.

It is a heart melting Talat Mahmood track that will give you a fuzzy feeling long after you finish listening to it.

Later on Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali and some other Bollywood Ghazal singers followed in his footsteps.

Sonu Nigam had music in his blood, as his parents did a lot of stage shows and musical performances, but he came from a very humble background and did not have any fancy, expensive instruments as a kid. He learnt on a mini harmonium. When he became a successful singer, he brought the costliest instruments for himself.

As he came from nowhere, he always had a deep longing to rise and shine.

He wanted to emerge out of the ashes like a Phoenix and by the blessings of God he achieved a lot. Sonu Nigam says that “My prayer is to learn new things, imbibe fresh insights. You must not take life too seriously. You must enjoy the process of living”.

Just like Sonu, we must learn new things, absorb new insights and not take life too seriously, instead enjoy the entire process of living.

Bollywood Heroes Singing For Their Heroine’s Eyes

Eyes are the epitome of beauty in Indian cinema. Just like the hero praises the heroine’s gorgeous hair, her eyes captivate his heart and make him sing verses dedicated to them. Hindi Films have the maximum number of songs in admiration of the heroine’s dazzling doe eyes which are time and again compared to the dark velvet of the night or the spreading black darkness of the storm clouds just like tresses, but tresses aren’t capable of expressing like the eyes which speak up a lot more than the mouth.

In this week’s Gaana Pehchaana blog, we’ll find out how heroes from the different decades wooed their leading ladies in their own style by singing about their magnificent eyes.

At times, they drowned in them, at times, they were lost in them and at other times, they communicated things that couldn’t be expressed in mere words.

This song was from Navketan banner’s debut film. It was also Kalpana Kartik’s last film and you’ll enjoy the sweet and sour ched-chad between Kalpana Kartik and Dev Anand as she asks him Aankhon mein kya Ji? and he answers Rupehla Badal.

In this song Kalpana’s identity of a woman from a Sardar man is revealed and they get down from the truck into a hay covered rustic area where this amazing melody composed by senior Burman, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by geniuses like Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar was shot.

It was the era of S.D Burman and he composed the best melodies that anybody could ever imagine. Nobody could write songs revolving around the eyes better than Majrooh Sultanpuri. Lata Mangeshkar-  Kishore Kumar were the Alka Yagnik- Udit Narayan of the 60s and who could have better expressed Dev Anand and Nanda’s eye to eye conversations through their perfect voices?

The entire soundtrack of Teen Deviyan was a superhit when released and continues to be a hit even today. Nanda’s stylish suits became a trendsetter in those days.

The iconic Aankhen song starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda has always left us intoxicated. Anand Bakshi and R.D Burman were at the peak of their career and Rafi was already the master of his art when this song came out.

This beautiful tune by junior Burman is a gem in the Masoom soundtrack wherein each song was sung by a different singer. This one was beautifully sung by Aarti Mukherjee, the singing sensation of Bengal.

The song is framed like a lullaby hummed by a mother for her kids while she peeps into the eyes of her daughters, whereas her foster son looks at them from a distance, as he misses his own mother. The lyrics by Gulzar are extremely emotional.
