1. Jaane Kaha Mera Jigar Gaya Ji
We still enjoy this hilarious number from the 1955 movie ‘Mr and Mrs 55’ directed by Guru Dutt. It doesn’t matter which generation you belong to, trust me you won’t be able to stop tapping your feet to this comic track. Without any doubt, O.P Nayyar is one of the greatest music composers of all time to have composed a musical masterpiece like ‘Jaane Kaha Mera Jigar Gaya Ji’. Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics will make you laugh your heart out and our all-time favourite singers Geeta Dutt, Mohammad Rafi prove that they were the singing gems of our industry. Last but not the least it was Johnny Walker and Yasmin (Vinita Bhatt) who breathed life into the song through their acting skills. Their duo helped highlight the comic elements in the song.
2. Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu
Who hasn’t heard of ‘Mera Naam Chin-Chin-Chu, Chin-Chin-Chu, Baba Chin Chin Chu, Raat Chandni Mai Aur Tu, Hello, Mister, How Do You Do?’ It’s a hugely popular cult track and we still love it. It was originally heard in the 1958 film ‘Howrah Bridge’ directed by Shakti Samanta. It boosted Geeta Dutt’s singing career and was a huge success for actress Helen, playing the role of a flirtatious dancer from Shanghai who sings this song in the movie. O.P Nayyar composed it and Omar Jalalabadi wrote the chucklesome lyrics.
3. Sar Jo Tera Chakraye
People say that this evergreen melody ‘Sar Jo Tera Chakraye Ya Dil Dooba Jaye’ was inspired by a song in the 1958 British Movie ‘Harry Black’. Many amongst you must have watched the 1957 film ‘Pyaasa’ directed by Guru Dutt, it was a heartwrenching film revolving around a sad theme. The protagonist poet’s struggles would actually bring tears to your eyes, but this high on comedy song where Johnny Walker sings about the positive effects of a Champi in order to distract the guards of a mental asylum to help the poet escape is an all-time favourite champi song, composed by our hugely accomplished composer and singer S.D Burman. Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the amusing lyrics and Mohammad Rafi the genius singer sang it.
4. Ek Chatur Naar
‘Ek Chatur Naar’ is from the 1968 romantic comedy ‘Padosan’. Indiatimes Movies declared it as one of the “Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films of all times”. The lyrics by Rajendra Krishan talk about a rustic simpleton trying to woo a modern city-bred girl. There is a fierce musical duel(Jugalbandi) between Saira Banu’s Music teacher played by Mehmood, an expert in Carnatic Music and the hero played by Sunil Dutt. The Hero is not a singing expert and takes help of his pan-chewing uncle Kishore Kumar, a professional singer. The singing Jugalbandi was actually fought amongst the two biggest singing giants Manna Dey singing for Mehmood and Kishore Kumar singing for the hero. This was another of Mr Burman’s biggest compositions of all time.
5. My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves.
Remember the famous 1997 superhit ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ starring Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan? I think this must be one of the very few songs in Bollywood starting with such mindboggling and rib-tickling English lyrics “You See The Whole Country Of The System, Is Juxtaposition By The Hemoglobin In The Atmosphere, Because You Are Sophisticated Rhetorician, Intoxicated By The Exuberance Of Your Own Publicity, My Name is Anthony Gonsalves, Main Duniya Mein Akela Hoon”. The film revolves around the lives of three brothers, separated at birth and raised up in families following 3 different faiths, but this track particularly focuses on Anthony Gonsalves the Christian, played by Amitabh Bachchan who is singing about himself and trying to woo the girls. Laxmikant Pyarelal one of the most successful composers composed this track, Anand Bakshi wrote the exceptional lyrics and Amitabh Bachchan himself sang some parts of it along with Kishore Kumar. It was the biggest blockbuster of 1977 and also won several awards at the 25th Filmfare Awards.
6. Badtameez Dil
Hats off to lyricist Abhijit Bhattacharya’s creativity, the ‘Badtameez Dil’ lyrics will make you laugh so much that you’ll be left gasping for breath. It starts with ‘Paan Main Pudeena Dekha, Naak Ka Nageena Dekha, Chikni Chameli Dekhi, Chikna Kameena Dekha, Chaand Ne Cheater Hoke Cheat Kiya Toh Saare Taare Bole Gilli Gilli Akhaa’. The entire song from beginning to end comprises of the most gibberish and catchy lyrics. It has been composed by Pritam, an expert composer for every genre of music and sung by Benny Dayal, Shefali Alvarez. Benny and Shefali hold on to breath and proceed with the lines so smoothly, that you won’t be able to guess the difficulty level of this entertaining number. ‘Badtameez Dil’ is undoubtedly the best track from the youth-centric film ‘Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani’. It would be hard for you to resist matching footsteps with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin.
7. Ala Barfi
Ala Barfi from the 2012 blockbuster ‘Barfi’ directed by Anurag Basu is reminiscent of the fun-filled and quirky songs sung by the yesteryear singing star Kishore Kumar. The role of ‘Barfi’ , a dumb but extremely helpful man was played by Ranbir Kapoor. The lyrics penned down by Swanand Kirkire fully brings out the fun and naughty side of Barfi, who is differently abled but still full of life, hope and positivity. Pritam’s composition is a package of delight and Mohit Chauhan helps add the soulful and rhythmic elements through his awesome singing.
