Gaana Ban Gaya Movie-Title!

Songs have been an integral part of Hindi Movies for eons now. But the ultimate ode to the song is when the title of the song becomes a title for the movie in the forthcoming years…

Before Shahrukh Khan decided to take Kajol from the shaadi ka mandap in the movie “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge”, Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz had pre-enacted that in Chor Machaye Shor to “Le Jayenge, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” … get it? The song title from that 70’s Mumtaz-Shashi movie became the movie title to the 90’s Shahrukh-Kajol movie!! In this regard Karz (1983) may take the cake .. in fact, the baker and the bakery too! Almost every song from Karz ended up being a movie title. Look at the list … Dard-E-Dil (1983), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Main Solah Baras Ki (1998), Paisa Yeh Paisa (1985), Ek Hasina Thi (2004), Om Shanti Om (2007). The only song that did not make the “cut” from the movie was “Kamaal Hai, Kamaal Hai…”

The very famous RD Burman tuned Yaadon Ki Baraat boasted of fabulous music, but the one song that ended up as a movie title was Chura Liya Hai Tumne (2002). Some other songs in the same vein… BOOND JO BAN GAYEE MOTI’s main song with Jeetendra-Mumtaz on a tonga, the Mukesh-Suman duet Haan Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya became an Abhishek-Karishma-Akshay starrer in 2002. Rishi-Neetu frolicked around in KHEL KHEL MEIN singing Ek Main Aur Ek Too that became a Rubaina-Rajesh starrer in the mid-80s. NAUNIHAAL’s awesome melody, sung my Mohd Rafi and composed by Madan Mohan became the Jeetendra-Hema starrer Meri Aawaz Suno (1981). UPKAAR’s famous Kasme Vaade song became Amitabh starrer in 1978. SHAGIRD had this beautiful Lata Number Dil Vil Pyar Vyar which became a movie of the same name in 2002. Interestingly enough, all songs from this movie were a tribute to RD Burman (his songs sung by contemporary singers) but the movie title was borrowed from a Laxmi-Pyare compsed movie! BRAHMACHARI’s super-famous song Savere Waali Gaadi became the Poonam Dhillon-Sunny Deol starrer (1986).

Another awesome Kishore-RD melody from AA GALE LAG JA .. “Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka …Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” was the Imran Khan-Genelia starrer called “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” in 2008. Last but not the least, while Rishi Kapoor danced to HUM KISI SE KAM NAHIN blowing the trumpet to Bachna Ai Haseenon, his super successful son danced to the same song in a movie of the same name as the song, 30+ years later! Very recently, the Hema Malini-dancing-on-glasss “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” from Sholay morphed into the Shahrukh-Katrina starrer of the same name.

That’s what Hindi Film Music is all about … to make sure that it lingers in your memory for a longer period of time, just change it into a movie title, giving it a new lease of life! Readers, I am sure there are several other famous songs out there that became (unrelated) movie titles. Think of any 5 famous songs – guaranteed at least 2 of them are also movie names.
